Kids, Teens, and Adults,
Scheduling is the greatest obstacle for most martial artists and parents. We understand that it is difficult for you and/or your children to come to martial arts class 2-3x a week. I'd like to give you some helpful scheduling tips to keep your training benefitial and rewarding.
Tip 1: Come to the appropriate belt color class For adults and children, classes are divided by skill levels. Check the class schedule at the school or online each month to ensure that you attend a class that is challenging! This will make a student's motivation for training much stronger, as they will continually learn new skills. Boredom can quickly errode a child's motivation to come to class.Tip 2: Frequency The golden rule of frequency is a minimum of 2x a week training with practice at home an additional 2x week. Our students learn that to truly become proficient at a skill, you must practice often and effeciently. By training regularly, you will continually see improvement and feel inspired. Layoffs make it difficult to stay motivated for the long haul.
TIP 3: Sparring / Grappling Classes At the beginner level, students focus on basic form, fitness, coordination, control, speed, and power. At the intermediate level, sparring and grappling classes are important to develop functionality in technique. We advise that a intermediate or advanced student should attend belt appropriate jiu jitsu classes 2x a week, and alternate sparring and grappling classes 1x a week. Sparring and grappling is practiced in regular classes along with self defense, padwork, and weapons training. TIP 4: Private Lessons Had a busy week? A private lesson may be the answer. Our instructors are available for 30 or 60 minute lessons to fine tune your training. Private lessons are great for catching up after time off, or for preparing for a belt test/competition.
TIP 5: Getting Kids to Class Regardless of how much fun they have at our school, all kids are sometimes resistent to stop what they're doing and go to class. Think about it, would you want to stop doing something fun to get in the car and drive 20 minutes to do something else fun? We advise to have your child do homework, chores, or something non-stimulating before it's time to leave for class. Consistently remind your child that to achieve goals like black belt, you have to stay comitted. Most kids would opt to not go to school if you gave them the choice. This is a good time to speak to your child about self discipline.
